A stunning work of exceeding delicacy! This extra large marriage hanky is loomed of a whisper thin egg-shell white lawn linen with an exqisitely embroidered monogram, "PD," demurely stitched in one corner of the central round. A magnificent border of Carrickmacross lace, a lace made of very finely appliqued motifs on a tulle ground, frames the central circle and is delicately incorporated along the inner edge with embroidered flowers that extend into the lawn. Typical of this lace, a variety of different background meshes fill the floral motifs, particularly around the outermost border. Carrickmacross, a lace that was first introduced in early 19th century Ireland, became very desirable toward the end of that century and spread all throughout Europe. This lovely handkerchief, likely dating from the late 19th century, is in excellent, almost perfect condition showing only one tiny area of weakness in the lawn, visible in the first photo. Dimensions: 18 x 17.5in.
