antique linen damask napkins monogram JH

antique linen damask napkins monogram JH

A truly magnificent service of eleven very large pure white linen damask napkins with a splendid monogram "TH" or "JH." The monogram is exceptionally fancy and is one of the rare instances where I was stumped interpreting the letters! There is undoubtedly an "H" but the second initial seems either to be a fancy "T" with the cross of the T curving tree-like around and under, or it's a "J" presented in a double mirror image, front to back. In either case, the embroidery is as exquisite as is humanly possible - an important relief of precise bourdon stitching with minute post point dots filling the interior of the H and jewel-like leaves draped over the letters. A floral medallion in the damask motif encircles the monogram in morning glories, and luxurious acanthus leaves and flowers make for an elaborate border frieze. The hems are all hand stitched with miniscule points. This beautiful service likely dates from the end of the 19th century and is in impeccable condition. Dimensions: 33 x 30in.
