antique silk embroidered Christening gown with matching bonnet

antique silk embroidered Christening gown with matching bonnet

A perfectly magnificent antique Christening gown with its original matching bonnet in a delicate ecru embroidered silk tulle and coordinating underslip in a diaphanous ecru silk. This splendid ensemble is embroidered with openwork flowers and leaves throughout the skirt, bodice and short puffed sleeves of the dress as well as the cap of the bonnet. The hem of the dress is beautifully finished with a border of embroidered openwork circles which continue the motif of the front panel of the skirt and is echoed in the edge of collar and the line of the high waist band as well as the edge of the bonnet. The photos illustrate both views of the dress with and without its underslip. Both the dress and slip close at the back with tiny mother-of-pearl buttons. The bonnet is equally lined in fine ecru silk and still has its original silk ties! This beautiful ensemble likely dates from the early 20th century and is in remarkably excellent condition. The only tiny flaw of note is a couple of pale rust spots on the silk ties of the bonnet. Dimensions: overall length 28.5in., width across the chests 12in., width across the shoulders 8.5in.
