A stunning set of four mid 19th century antique linen damask dish towels that were likely hand woven on personal looms. These lovely towels have a checkerboard motif in the damask and a small monogram "AA" embroidered in red cross stitch one corner. The linen is silky to the touch, slightly slubby and with a subtle sheen. The fineness of the linen indicates that they very likely served as "essuie-verres," the towels reserved for drying fine crystal. All the hems are stitched by hand with miniscule points and the selvaged edges are slightly irregular, typical of hand woven pieces. Impeccable condition. A second identical set of four towels is available. Dimensions: 34.5 x 26.5in.
