Antique Sheet with Noble Provenence Monogram SB

Antique Sheet with Noble Provenence Monogram SB

The French nobility displayed their stature in a variety of ways, not the least of which were the emblems embroidered on clothing and household linens. This fabulous sheet belonged to the family of a count bearing the initials, "SB." And as with the vast majority of linens with noble provenance, the quality of the materials and the handwork is exceptional! The sheet is loomed of a very tightly woven and weighty, pure white "fil de lin" linen with a silken hand and a luxurious drape. The monogram, "SB," and its nine pointed comtal crown are exceptionally large and embroidered with an even more unusual relief. This impressive monogram is the only decoration on this elegant sheet, save a delicate drawn thread row embroidered along the width of the sheet return. Its impressive size, measuring more than four yards in lenth (!) speaks to the quality and luxuriousness of the piece. Likely dating from the end of the 19th century, this stunning sheet is in impeccable condition. Dimensions: 160 x 95in.
