An exceptional infant Christening gown hand made of fine white linen lawn, silk ribbons and lace. This spectacular gown, likely dating from the turn of the 20th century, is remarkable not only for its beauty but also for its impeccable, seemingly unused condition! The bodice is finely ribbed with tiny pin-tuck pleats and inserts of Valenciennes lace as well as delicately threaded butter-yellow silk ribbons. Both the collar and short, capped sleeves are threaded with the same silk ribbons and are edged with a Valenciennes lace ruffle. Below, a very full, semi-transparent skirt picks up the motif at its hem with a large band of eleven tiny pin-tuck pleats followed by alternating bands of threaded silk ribbons and Valenciennes lace, and terminates with a very pretty, wide lace ruffle. At the interior of the high waist are threaded several fine laces that can be cinched at the back, a practical detail that allows for a relatively broad range of sizes. The neckline too can be ajusted with one of the silk ribbons that ties at the back. The dress closes at the back with four, cloth covered buttons. Dimensions: overall length 33.5in., width between the shoulders 8.25in. Suitable for an infant of three to twelve months, and possible even a few more.
