Antique duvet cover and two sham ensemble mono MP with inset Venetian lace.

Antique duvet cover and two sham ensemble mono MP with inset Venetian lace.

Exquisite and rare, this antique sheet and two sham ensemble is loomed of the most wonderfully fine and aerien pure white linen batiste. Ideal as summerweight linens, the batiste is light as a feather, silken to the touch, yet tightly woven and sturdy. Both the sheet and two matching shams have elegantly embroidered monograms, "MP," stitched in a fancy bourdon with an important relief within a diamond of the very finest seedstitch points. Both the sheet and shams have important inserts of hand made Venetian lace, although the pattern of the lace of the sheet coordinates but is not identical to that of the shams. The sheet has a wide 4.5 inch band of an intricately patterned lace with a geometric motif that runs the entire width of the sheet return and up each side for a full 36 inches, thus making for more than four yards of exquisite hand made Venetian lace. The shams each have a floral Venetian lace which creates an inner border, and which has a coordinating geometric pattern in each of the four corners. The lace, made of fine linen thread, is delicate in its appearance but sturdy insofar as its fabrication. The monograms on the shams are in the upper left and right corners respectively of each sham, making them a "true pair" that bookend each side of the bed. The shams close at the back with six tiny mother-of-pearl buttons. Likely dating from the turn of the 20th century this ensemble is in impeccable condition. There is only a small white spot on one of the lateral edges of the sheet which is visible only by transparence. Dimensions: sheet 136 x 94.5in., shams interior 27 x 27in., exterior 30 x 30in.
