A superbly gracious set of three very large fine linen damask guest hand towels with an elegant three letter monogram "MLM" embroidered at one extremity. These lovely towels are loomed of an extremely supple, fine and silky pure white linen with an overall pattern known in French as "oeil de perdrix," or eye of the partridge, for its rounded diamond shape damask weave. Two outer bands in the damask define the border, an inner band of leaves and an outer Greek key pattern, and the extremities are finished in a long, hand-knotted fringe. The monograms are exceedingly beautiful in their embroidery, very padded but delicate in their conception and execution, the letters joined from above by the ribbons of a sensuous bow. This service dates undoubtedly from the latter half of the 19th century and is in impeccable condition. Dimensions: 40 x 23in. plus 5in. fringe at each extremity
