vintage fabric, Liberty of London

Two very wide panels of a superb vintage cotton fabric, "Burnham," of Liberty of London, reissued after their original Art Nouveau printed cotton of the same motif. These wonderfully decorative panels show a bold pattern of exotic flowers alternating with large bunches of grapes, all in wonderfully typical Art Nouveau tones of aubergine, sea green, aquamarine and persimmon on a cafe au lait ground. Each panel meausres 67 inches in height by 101 inches wide and is composed of two perfectly matched lengths of fabric stiched together with a vertical seam in the middle which is impeccably aligned along the motif such that the seams are virtually invisible. (The selvedged edges of each sewn panel are present at the interior of their central seams, thus if the seams were to be undone, one would have four individual panels each measuring 67 inches long by 52.5 inches wide) The cotton is of a medium weight, with a slightly crisp hand and a matte surface, and has retained the vibrancy of its colors as can be seen in the photos, showing only very subtle fading along a single outer lateral edge of each panel where the extremities of the fabric had been weakened by light damage (these panels having been formerly lined and mounted as drapes). However, apart from an inch or two along the one outer selvedged edge of each panel, the fabric is otherwise in perfect condition. Dimensions: two panels each measuring 67in. in length and 101in. in width, each with a central, perfectly matched seam in the lengthwise sense
