A very elegant sheet and pillow sham ensemble with a lovely and large central monogram "JL" accented with sprigs of leaves and berries, all of which is expertly embroidered in an important relief of bourdon, post and tige point. This pretty set was among a number of linens purchased from the same estate, all of which were of truly exceptional quality in every respect. The linen, a soft pale ecru, is fine and strong, very tightly woven but crisp and airy and the embroidery is precise and tasteful. A subtle but very pretty row of finely embroidered polka dots runs between two delicate drawn thread rows along the length of the sheet return as well as a full 38 inches of its height on either side. The sham displays a smaller version of the monogram in one corner as well as the same row of tiny embroidered dots between two drawn thread rows along its perimeter, and it closes at the back with seven mother-of-pearl buttons. Early 20th century. Perfect condition although a few pale traces of storage marks remained after laundering, which will completely come clean in the next one or two washes. Dimensions: sheet 120 x 96in., sham interior 27 x 26.5in, exterior 29 x 28.5in.
