Exceptional embroidered hankerchief, Date:1850

Exceptional embroidered hankerchief, Date:1850

A simply extraordinary piece this handkerchief, dating from the beginning of the Napoleon III period, or about 1850, is a spectacular example of handwork. On hand-loomed and very fine lawn linen, it displays a virtual garden of intricately embroidered flowers executed with miniscule stitches and a rare finesse. The bordering net, also hand made and of a singular form without seams, is delicately worked with tiny needle lace flowers. This truly remarkable 'chef d'oeuvre' is in perfect condition and has probably not only never been used but has likely never touched water. Its color is the original unbleached wheat color of unwashed linen. (The photos appear much more white than the actual handkerchief). Its provenance is very likely royal as it was part of an assortment of linens that came from a chateau in the Loire Valley, among which were numerous pieces embroidered with royal arms. And quite possibly, the motif in each of the four corners is topped by a stylized representation of a five pointed crown. Dimensions: 16.5 x 15.5
