A truly magnificent marriage sheet that was undoubtedly the pride, joy and long labor of a young and talented bride! This spectacular piece of work is loomed of an extremely supple, silken and weighty white "fil de lin" linen. A striking central monogram, "SA," is embroidered in an important relief of plumetis for the outline, filled with miniscule post point grains, and embellished with sprigs of embroidered leaves and flowers through the center of the letters. The sheet return is decorated with three abundant floral sprays embroidered in an impeccable bourdon stitch, one in the center and one in each of two corners, strung together by three rows of drawn thread ladderwork interspersed with embroidered pearls and floral rondels, all of which continues up each side of the return for a full 38 inches. Such ample padded embroidery of this precision, elegance and important relief is as rare as it is beautiful! The hem at the foot of the sheet is hand sewn with tiny stitches. Likely dating from the mid to late 19th century, this spectacular sheet is in impeccable condition. Dimensions: 126 x 92in.
