A treasure trove of embroidery this stunning work was undoubtedly created as a marriage sheet and required untold hours to realize! Loomed of an excellent quality, weighty but finely loomed and pure white "fil de lin" linen, the sheet boasts a superb central monogram, "ML," executed in Richelieu openwork embroidery. The letters are dotted with English cutwork flowers and entwined with embroidered vines that loop into leafy festoons and string a series of framed four-leaf clovers. The entire expanse of the sheet return is densely embroidered with similar vines and flowers that pick up the monogram design and a series of fanciful Richelieu openwork globes reminiscent of pomegranates, the symbol of fertility and abundance, which themselves culminate in a fleur de lys motif, the symbol of French nobility. These elaborate embroidery motifs travel up each side of the sheet return for an important height of 34," all of which is gloriously finished with a Renaissance cutwork floral border. Judging from the monogram style this impressive piece likely dates from about 1910 and is in impeccable, as-new condition. Dimensions: 142 x 90.5in.
