Birds! A rare service of twelve large antique linen damask napkins with a charming motif featuring pheasants, ducks, and pairs of baby chicks. These delightful napkins are loomed of a very fine, pure white linen damask with a crisp hand and a subtle sheen. Each napkin is hand embroidered with an elegant central monogram, "TM," executed in a scrolling bourdon with an important relief and embellished with finely embroidered acorns and leaves. The letters are framed within a damask wreath and sit atop a lovely rendering in the damask of a pheasant. The border motif consists of a wide frieze with a Greek key pattern strung with circular medallions, each framing a different bird portrait. A second narrower ribbon motif defines the border. All of the hems are hand stitched with miniscule points. This unusual and very beautiful service likely dates from the end of the 19th century and is in impeccable condition! OF NOTE: Four additional similar, but not identical, napkins also with a bird motif and from the same estate are available upon request. Dimensions: 34 x 26in.
